According to China National Seismic Network to determine, a strong earthquake at 8.0-magnitude hit Wenchuan County, Sichuan (31 degrees north latitude, 103.4 degrees east longitude) at 14:28. It cause serious losses of life and property in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Chongqing.

Offically reported on 18th, May 2008, 32477 people have been killed and 220109 people are wounded by the earthquake.
Heavy casualty in some disaster areas were reported by CHINENEWS (http://www.chinanews.com) as follows,
Wenchuan Country
337 people are found killed. Villages on hills arround the country were almost razed to the ground. Because of traffic problem, quantity of missing person and wounded person are still unknown.
Dujiang Dam
More than 50 people are found killed. There are still some people bauried under collapsed buildings of high school in Juyuan country.
Qing Chuan County
More than 800 people are found killed. More than 5000 people were wounded and
More than 300 people including 90 students were still buried in the ruined land. All traffic and communication were cut after the earthquake. 250000 people have nowhere to go.
Mao Country
105000 people are suffered for the disaster. 95 people are found killed, 836 people are wounded, 92 people are missing. There are 56 people severe wounded and need to be moved and cured. Because 213 national highway which connect to Mao Country is broke and cut in the earthquake, 5000 local peopls and 2000 tourists still get trapped in the country. Large quantity of food and tetanus injection are needed in Mao Country currently.
De Yang
According to incomplete statistic data, the strong earthquake has killed 10315 people in De Yang. 67170 people are wounded, 4714 people are buried and 3585 people are missing. At present, 12147 people are rescued from De Yang disaster ared, 793755 refugees are lodged temporarily.
Bei Chuan
Bei Chuan is the harder-hit area in this strong earthquak. All buildings in the whole country are almost broke down. Until afternoon 17th, May, 2008, there are 7227 people killed, 5390 people wounded, 5897 people missing and 4459 people still buried.
Mian Yang
12149 people are found killed, more than 68100 people are wounded, more than 23600 people are rescued from the ruined area, more than 600000 refugees are lodged temporarily.
